I am deeply grateful to have been selected as the AGM Randeree Scholar for 2025-2026. This scholarship enables me to study in Cambridge, where I can expand my research ambitions and deepen my knowledge as part of a world-leading academic community. Ultimately, with guidance from the Trust, I believe my time here will give me the resources to constructively give back to British society by continuing to be an advocate for representation and social justice for all.
My academic interests surround the intersections between morality, power, and protest, with a focus on how capitalism and Islamophobia shape public perceptions of activism. My thesis will interrogate how activism is portrayed as immoral when it disrupts capitalist or state interests. I intent to build on my recently published article, ‘A Capitalist Morality: How Capitalism is Influencing our Ethics (for the Worse)’. The MPhil in Economic and Political Sociology is particularly suited to this area of research, exploring social movements, revolutions, and ideologies. The scholarship programme will grant me the tools to pursue a more robust theoretical and methodological inquiry, enhancing my ability to contribute meaningfully to academia and public discourse.
I hope to equip Muslim communities to reclaim moral legitimacy in the face of criminalisation and widespread demonisation, and ensure Muslim activism can be celebrated not despite its religious grounding, but because of it.
With the ever increasing rise in Islamophobia both nationally and globally, to ensure that British voices are heard and respected in academic discussions and beyond and particularly on issues that directly affect our communities.
